I would like for you to help me find my next book to read. As a reminder, I am a 25 year old male who likes introspection, road trip/journey stories, sex/relations, appalchian history, artificial intelligent/futurism, war stories, the avante-garde. Does not like fantasy. So far this year I have read the following: Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami (307 Pages): 5/5 - I loved how this book followed a male character with flaws as he explored sexuality, morality, etc while also exploring Tokyo. I enjoyed the scenes of him going to the Sanitorium as an addict who has been to rehab. I enjoyed his slice of life moments of college life while also having these larger than life moments with people who impacted him a lot. I also enjoyed the level of complexity the writing was at. I liked this book a lot. The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers (423 Pages): 4/5 - I enjoyed following these characters through their space journey and loved learning about various people in this imagined world. I specifically really enjoyed considering AIs and the struggles they brought as they became more sentient. I wasn't too crazy about diversity and inclusion being such a forward theme. The book as a whole also didn't allow itself to get too into more intense moments of sex and sorrow which I would've found interesting. Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver (560 Pages): Did not Finish - I really wanted to like this book and had a lot of fun with a lot of it. Demon is such a great character and I was getting really into appalachian history at the time. I loved and rooted for him, but by the time he started to get hooked into painkillers it was either too hard to read or just wasn't moving fast enough for me. A lot of this book felt like work to explore, not excitement to move forward - which I'm not sure why. All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque (296 Pages): 4/5 - I really enjoyed how visceral this book was. Parts were a little harder or strange to read I think because of the German origin, but ultimately the story was personal and intense which I enjoyed a lot. I would've liked to explore more of the small moments this character has as he went into France, but ultimately that wasn't the focus. The Giver by Lois Lowry (289 Pages): 3/5 - I read this book as a kid and wanted to tackle it again. It was a little boring to explore, but a super easy read. I found moments within the community interesting to explore, but this book wasn't as complex as I would've hoped. City of Thieves (284 Pages): 3/5 - I found this book to feel a little too created for a younger audience for me. The main character complained a lot in a way that I couldn't fully immerse myself to - or it was too focused on the coming of age without a lot of satisfying growth. I really enjoyed exploring war torn Stalingrad and becoming immsersed into that aspect of the world. I also enjoyed some of the grittier moments. My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh (301 Pages): 4/5 - I found it really interesting to explore what this experience would've been like and become immersed in those details. I thought the exploration into drug use into the psyche of an individual like the protagonist was done really well and the pacing was fun to follow. I was a bit bored in the middle with the funeral arc, but towards the end became very invested again. I am continuing looking for novels that allow me to follow a character as I read every night. Please feel free to ask me some questions or simply reccomend some books for me and why you think I'd like them!
